How Fate of the North handles your data

The short version: we keep only what the game needs to run, we don't track you, there are no ads and nothing is shared with anyone. You can download everything we hold about you, and delete your account, at any time.

Who runs the game

Fate of the North is run privately by the owner of this server, who is responsible for your data (the "data controller"). Questions about your data: send a message in the game to the player admin.

What we keep, and why

WhatWhyHow long
Your account: player name, password (only as a one-way hash, which nobody can read back), when you joined and when you were last active, and any beginner protection or ban with its reason. To let you log in and play, to show who is online, and to keep the game fair.Until you delete your account.
Your game: villages, buildings, troops, resources, your jarl and items, your gold with a ledger of where it came from and went, trades, reports, statistics, achievements and saga progress. This is the game itself.Until you delete your account, or the world is reset (accounts are kept then; villages start again).
Messages and alliance posts you write. To deliver them to the players you write to.Until you or they delete them, or you delete your account.
Failed logins: the player name that was tried, and the internet (IP) address it came from. To stop people guessing passwords.15 minutes.
Web server logs: for each page request, the time, your IP address, the page address and the kind of browser. Security, and finding faults.30 days.
Backups: a copy of the whole game database, made every night. So the game survives a broken disk or a mistake.14 days, so a deleted account is fully gone within 14 days.

We never ask for your e-mail address, real name, age, location or any payment details, and the game does not collect them. The legal basis is that we need this data to provide the game you signed up for (GDPR article 6(1)(b)); the failed logins and server logs are kept for security, which is a legitimate interest (article 6(1)(f)).

On your device

  • One cookie, PHPSESSID, keeps you logged in. It is strictly necessary, holds no personal information itself, and ends when you log out or close the browser (or after about 24 minutes without activity). There are no other cookies, so there is no cookie banner.
  • The game remembers a few small things in your browser's own storage, which never leave your device: whether you turned on notifications, which attacks, reports and messages you have already been told about, and whether you have seen the beginner-protection warning.
  • If you install the game as an app, your browser keeps a small "you are offline" page so it can show it without a connection.
  • No analytics, no tracking pixels, no advertising, no social media buttons. Every picture, script and style comes from this server; nothing loads from anyone else.

Who sees your data

Other players see what the game shows them: your player name, profile, villages on the map, alliance, rankings and achievements, and the messages you send them. We do not sell or give your data to anyone. The game runs on the operator's own server; no outside company processes your data. Whoever runs the server can technically reach the database, including messages, and will only look at them to deal with a reported abuse or a fault.

Your rights

  • See your data: once logged in, download everything we hold about you from your account page, as a file.
  • Delete your account: from your account page once logged in. It takes effect at once.
  • Correct something, object to how we use your data, or ask anything else: contact us as described above.
  • Complain to a data protection authority. In Norway that is Datatilsynet; elsewhere, the authority where you live.

Children

The game is not meant for children under 13. If you are younger, ask a parent or guardian before you play.

Changes

If we change how the game handles data, we update this page and its date. Bigger changes are announced in the game.
